Mission Statement
The Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business strives to combine academic experience with real world applications and seeks to achieve its mission by implementing innovative courses of study in the entertainment and music industries.
Goals
The Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business has the following goals:
- To provide a personalized, career-oriented and practical education that emphasizes leadership, innovation, private enterprise and entrepreneurship.
- To equip students with the tools to think critically, communicate effectively, accept responsibility, make successful decisions, and prosper in diverse work environments.
- To emphasize quality classroom instruction within the parameters of ethical Christian principles.
Audio Engineering Technology
The College of Entertainment and Music Business offers graduate courses in Audio Engineering Technology that are currently utilized as required and elective study in the Master of Music (M.M.) Commercial Music curriculum. Students in the M.M. degree program should refer to the Graduate Studies in Music bulletin pages for requirements and policies of the Master of Music (M.M.) Commercial Music curriculum.
Entertainment and Music Business
The College of Entertainment and Music Business offers an elective track specialization in Entertainment and Music Business within the Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) degree program. Students in this elective track specialization option within the M.B.A. degree program should refer to the Graduate Studies in Business bulletin pages for requirements and policies.
- Purpose: Through active learning and scholarly exploration the Master of Business Administration degree with a specialization in entertainment and music business is designed to prepare individuals for career advancement in mid- and upper-level administrative and managerial positions in the entertainment and music business.
- Goals: The goals of the M.B.A. with a specialization in entertainment and music business are to (1) provide students with a broad view of essential business functions through business core courses and (2) allow the student to gain in-depth knowledge of the entertainment and music business through a flexible choice of elective courses.
- Admissions: In addition to the application process for admission to the M.B.A. program, candidates for the electives option in Music Business will also meet with the Admissions Specialist in the Mike Curb College of Entertainment and Music Business to assist in the development of an appropriate course plan to meet each candidate's career goals.
Audio Engineering Technology Courses and Music Business Courses
Audio Engineering Technology (AET)
AET 5050. Critical Listening for Audio & Music Production (2). Prerequisite: Senior undergraduate status and AET, M.B.A. or M.M. majors only. The study and practice of ear training as it relates to the identification, manipulation, and perception of sound. This course provides a concentrated study utilizing exercises designed to develop specific listening skills in audio and music production.
AET 5230 Auditory Perception and Hearing Science. (3). Prerequisite: Senior undergraduate status and AET, M.B.A. or M.M. graduate majors only. This course is a research-oriented study of auditory perception, psychoacoustics, and hearing science as it relates to audio engineering, sound recording, and music production.
AET 6025. Master Recording Techniques (2). A study of the history, influence, and application of recording technology to music production for today's media. Through critical listening analysis, combined with an in-depth study of analog and digital recording methods, students will explore and discover recording techniques through the re-creation of historically significant master recordings.
AET 6990. Independent Study (1-3). Under some circumstances, an independent study may be available in audio engineering. An AET instructor must agree to oversee the study. Prior approval of the Associate Dean is required.
Music Business Courses (MBU)
MBU 6200. Entertainment Asset Management (2). This course examines how different organizations are structured to exploit and manage entertainment assets including copyrights, master recordings and artists.
MBU 6310. Entertainment Economics (2). An application of microeconomic principles and techniques to the major industries that comprise the entertainment sector of the U.S. economy as well as an examination of the influence of macroeconomic forces, demography and public policy on these industries.
MBU 6335. Music Licensing and Contracts (2). This course explores contracts, advanced licensing issues and current legal trends' impact on the music industry.
MBU 6350. Technology in the Business of Music (2). A broad-based study of technology in the music business including audio recording technology, digital delivery systems, and issues surrounding technology's use on a global basis.
MBU 6360. Strategic Marketing in the Music Business (2). This course is a study of the traditional and emerging methods used to market and distribute recorded product from the label to the consumer.
MBU 6390. Internship (1-2). Prerequisite: Approval of Department Chair. A student may gain practical experience in the music industry by working in a music related business. May be repeated once for a maximum of 2 hours credit.
MBU 6990. Independent Study (2). Under some circumstances, an independent study may be available in any area of the program, such as accounting, finance, management, etc. An instructor in that area must agree to oversee the study. Prior approval of the directing professor and the Associate Dean is required.
